Expectations

I often remind myself not to have expectations. To go into a situation or conversation without already planning the ending. I have to remind myself of this because I tend to create high expectations for myself and others. The more I can let go of my expectations, the more I am open to the moment and enjoy it full-heartedly.

When we start with expectations, we already create an energetic field around the situation. In essence, we are manipulating the experience. You might think this is okay because you can influence the outcome to a more “positive” experience, essentially wanting the best result. But the problem arises because we can not foresee how the other person or event are intertwined in the web of life. When we pull one string, we tug at a thousand more.

Of course, this happens with every interaction we have with each other, but the difference lies between controlling and surrendering. Surrendering to the flow allows the web to adjust organically, tugging here and there, holding the tension where needed, and releasing when necessary. An intricate process divinely beautiful in nature that only asks us to trust. Trust that when you let go of expectations and step into the moment as it is, you allow everyone and everything around you to fall into the perfect place. It is like a vast exhalation that settles the body until the need comes for a new breath.

And so we stand in life taking breath for breath and trusting the process. Flowing with the ebb and flow, the beating of the heart, the rise and fall, together we weave webs that hold our entire existence. Asking nothing of each other in return except the letting go of expectations. To stand together and hold space for one another just as we are, so magnificently perfect.
